  • Artists Describing Their Art:

Nancy Wood - I received B.A. and MFA degrees in Fine Arts from the University of California, Los Angeles and a Ph.D. degree in Educational Psychology from Texas A & M University, College Station. Trained in oil painting, sculpture, printmaking, and photography I've spent the last 15 years working with digital media. My artworks have been exhibited locally, nationally and internationally, received some awards and are included in private and corporate collections. I've taught art on the college level for 20 years. My current work is a synthesis of photography and digital painting, an artistic process that explores issues of formalism using the aesthetics of the Texas Hill Country. The resulting images invite the viewer to engage intimately with a dynamic moment in the environmental milieu. More of my work can be seen on my website:

Kimi Nishikawa - My artworks start with a landscape or detail I find compelling, which I capture as a digital photograph. The subjects appropriated are mostly landscapes or natural objects in Washington County, NY, where I live. To create repeat patterns, I copy, flip and rotate a selected area of a photograph so that the pieces fit together seamlessly to simulate a complete and mysteriously ordered universe. A limited number of coherent, non-disjointed'wallpaper' patterns can be made. These images are facile manipulations, but each contains a unique pattern arising from the alignment of components of the original photograph. The patterns, often beautiful and intricate, are perceived as abstract, while the details are seen as photographic. The result is ambiguous, an elaboration of the natural world that exists simultaneously in two contradictory states....

Nancy Bechtol - Artists explore and give the world a view of their personal heightened awareness. I visualize and think with keen beliefs and insights. Reflection of human and societal concerns which cross emotional boundaries-- communicating that which is unspoken. My traditional art foundations of drawing, painting and printmaking, evolved into video, digital photography and experimental media. I use digital photography and imaging to envision the concepts originating from the creative pulse. An individual artist explores and gives the world a view of their personal heightened awareness. Vincenzo Montella - Vincenzo Montella was born in Benevento, Italy the 7/14/1952 and lives in Naples where works as psychiatrist. He is graduated in Medicine and Philosophy and specialist in psychiatry and family psychotherapy. He is artist, poet and photographer. He studied photography at the Toscana Photographic Workshops attending courses of William Allard, Michael Yamashita, Machiel Botman, Alex Webb, Jeff Jacobson, Arkady Llove, Sarah Moon, Carol Dragon. ...

Bret Culp - All that remains of a formidable castle is a crumbling ruin overgrown with vines and moss; sunrise illuminates early morning fog drifting silently through a valley in an instant that will exist only once in time; a mountain is gradually devoured by wind and water leaving behind sediment that is already becoming something new. I am interested in examining man's relationship between the ephemeral and the eternal as well as the cyclical patterns of growth and decline that binds all material things. Careful observation reveals the beauty within each moment of a world in continuous change....

Garin Horner - The Process Typically, photographs are windows looking out to an event that occurred at a moment in time. In other words, a photograph is evidence of something someone saw. I am a photographer in this sense, but photography as described above is the starting place for my artwork. When I compose an image with a camera I see the way appearances form a scene in the viewfinder, but I also visualize how that image could tell a story when juxtaposed in relationship to other images. Part of the process is juxtaposing images in order to express stories and ideas in visually poetic ways. In addition to the camera, I am interested in using other tools for image making. Light is the most important tool and the camera allows me to shape and control the presentation of light. Yet razor blades, X-acto knives, and transparent tape are also tools I use in order to craft my images. These tools allow me to physically reconfigure and juxtapose images as the elements of a visual language. Manipulating images by arranging their proximity to one another in a composition can create photograph that speaks more than the sum of its parts. Hand craftsmanship ...

Jim Lively - Whether portrayed in the abstract, realism, or somewhere in between, I am most influenced by both the beautiful and unattractive components of contemporary urban culture. Many times, one painting will reflect both components. My art tends to focus upon interesting juxtapositions of close-up images of human faces. Often, the larger images border upon realism and are caught expressing a panoply of emotions usually directed at the other images that share the canvas. Several of my recent works such as the tongue in cheek entitled "Lenin and Things" contain unlikely combinations of images such as a statue of Lenin which is dwarfed by a billboard size fashion model displaying a vacuous stare. A number of works contain both large images and interrelated small images. For example in the painting "Staring at Natalie", all the smaller images are a depiction of a collective group of voyeurs staring at a larger image of a posed fashion model. I want those viewing the painting to be the ultimate voyeur. The viewer is not only drawn initially to the larger image in its own right but also cannot help but then notice the relationship of the smaller images to the large image. Works displayed ...

Jon Glaser - There is something fulfilling about capturing a moment in time particularly as the sun makes its first or last appearance. My photographic work reflects an affinity for movement and sound; the latter reminiscent of a song, starting calmly, building strength, power and energy, until the shutter releases and the image is recorded as the ultimate crescendo. While I am most drawn to the grand landscape, my portfolio includes macro still life and abstract work as well, showcasing a relationship between color and light. NOTE: All of my photographs have been processed with Photoshop and Lightroom withlittle manipulation or adjustment. All colors are true of their location. In addition, I print all images using the latest technology, the highest-quality papers, and newest archival inks. All photographs include a 5mm white border to ensure proper handling that helps eliminate the potential for fingerprints. ...

Jon Glaser - Gottfried In Berlin - A photographer/artist, whose works were conceived over a period of forty years on three continents. They are produced in oil, crayon, pencil, and very predominantly, negative and transparency film. Some of these are now reproduced in small, worldwide strictly limited editions, generally of no more than 30 prints, each with a Certificate of Authenticity. Others are available in open editions in various formats. ...
