At one time or another we have each used the phrase “butterflies in my stomach”. Anxiety disorders are a very common experience however, unlike physical objects, they cannot be held in your hands. Using butterflies as a metaphor, this series of works creates a visual representation of this emotion.
Through a variety of mediums, from resin and plaster to digital painting and motion graphics, I create a dichotomy between objects. The solid, heavy and visually weighted forms speak to strength in contrast to the semi-transparent fragile surfaces that can be easily destroyed. I intend for the repetition of form, the surfaces suffocated by butterflies, and the progressive thinning out of elements to symbolize a person’s journey to improvement. And although I use light in my work to send a positive message, I invite viewers to question their own mental health and experience something like the nervousness and fear associated with this disorder....
