A common thread runs though my work: themes of loss, protection, religion, tenderness, fragility, power and paradox. As I build my abstract tools, vessels and structures they begin to take on their own personality- some are sharp, some ridiculous, some failing, some untouchable. Their true purpose is often elusive. A bronze Fate Device, comfortably cradled, awaits its task…tied too tightly to be moved, fate yet to be determined. A cart constructed of fragile reeds, guarded by a creature- or perhaps the cart guards the creature? Wife of Epimetheus entices one to peer into the slotted window, but the bronze lid prevents a closer look. The window has done its job—one need not lift the lid to release the contents.
Nests, towers and snares explore ill-conceived intentions of protection. In Undetermined Danger, an unidentified object has been captured and bound to calm fear of the unknown. Snare with Attached Illusion is a fragile toy where one might become trapped in endless repetitions. Remains is a protective tower for ashes of an idea or soul.
