Fabio Butera
Born in Nicastro (Catanzaro, Italy) on the 18th of June 1961.
He attended several craft-workshops on ceramics and woodwork and learned the basics of drawing and painting in his father’s fashion atelier at Lamezia Terme. During his early experience in the field of painting he contributed to founding avant-guard movements in Calabria, like Interno 10 and Magazzini Voltaire.
He then devoted himself to sculpture, particularly to the making of masks in leather, wood and stone. With this kind of work he established his fame in Italy and abroad, with a series of exhibitions and installations.
His theatre masks led him to frequent and fruitful collaborations with the theatre world: in 1998 he became a member of the company Teatro Proskenion in Scilla (Italy) and he joined the international theatre network Linea Trasversale (based in Italy, Scotland, Denmark, Malta, Spain, Brazil, USA). With Teatro Proskenion in particular, he has collaborated to the organization of several yearly sessions of the University of Eurasian Theatre, directed by Eugenio Barba. Some of his masks are present in several international collections, like Taviani’s (Rome), Odin Teatret’s (Holstebro, Denmark), Claudio Bozzi’s (Melbourne) and at the Drama Department of the Wesleyan University (Middletown, Connecticut).
