Beverly was a self taught artist until her family moved to Washington State she studied under Ron Lukas at the Artist Workshop in Seattle. Mr. Lukas was the protg of the late Russian Impressionist Sergei Bongart. Bongart studied in Kiev, Russia with a pupil of Repin a Russian Master Dudley feels extremely fortunate to have studied with Lukas. He left Seattle in April, 1995 for a position with the Dream Team of Hollywood
Spielberg, Kastenberg, and Geffen.

Although portraits are her passion, Beverly Dudley is known through out many states as the Magnolia Belle from the south, because of her paintings of magnolias and of course her southern charm.
Before moving back to the south, Beverly lived and worked in the art oriented city of Bellevue, Washington. She taught individualized drawing and oil painting techniques at the Ilona Rittler School of Fine Arts, located on Main Street.

In 1961 her father framed her first pastel drawing. The desire to create and paint has been with her all her life. When Im painting she says the world is on hold Impressionism is prominent in her works of art, also a touch of fantasy.

Dudleys interest are in pencil, Charcoal drawings and her favorite oil. She believes we are all creative and if a person has the desire to paint, they probably can. She says ,We only compete with ourselves.
People often ask, How do you do it How long does it take You can get the basics in a class, but this must be backed up with hours of study and practice. One wouldnt think of becoming a concert pianist merely by attending classes. How long does it takeA LIFETIME.

Dudley has been an illustrator for a wild animal clinic in Seattle, a nonprofit organization, established to nurture and treat wounded animals and birds of prey then releasing them back into the wild.

Her paintings are included in collections of major corporations such as NACO WestBellevue, Washington Pine Lake Medical CenterIssaquah, Washington Pediatric AssociatesBellevue, Washington Hancock BankOcean Springs, Mississippi Delta Blues MuseumClarksdale, Mississippi Beverly did a drawing of Billy Gibbons, a member of the ZZ Top Band, when he was in Clarksdale, also a double portrait of Muddy Waters and John Lee Hooker while living in Clarksdale, MS. The Old Boarding House GalleryMagee Mississippi and others.

Dudley had the honor of painting an oil portrait of The First Lady of Mississippi, Mrs. Pat Fordice. The Life size portrait was displayed in the Governors Mansion in Jackson, MS, outside Mrs. Fordices office when her husband was governor. Dudley also painted the past Governor of Louisiana, Edwin Edwards, for his wife Candy, to be given as her first Christmas gift.

Beverly lives with her husband Ray amid the rich cultural heritage of art, theater, and music second to none, in Ruston, Louisiana .
Living throughout the U. S. has been enriching but we are very glad be in Louisiana and make our home in Ruston.

The best part of being an artist, she said, is being commissioned to paint things you love painting, such as childrens toys, grandmas flower vase, your great aunts tea cups, etc. These things keep on giving as years go by. One of her favorite paintings is of a grandpas pipe and grandmas vase with flowers next to an open family bible. Such personal things and yet they can be shared by all as they are handed down generation after generation.

NCLAC, PINEY HILLS WELCOME NEW ARTISTS
•News
By: April Honaker associate director of the North Central Louisiana Arts Council.
Beverly Dudley and Margie Bottoms were recognized and honored as new artists at a reception
The North Central Louisiana Arts Council held a reception for new and returning artists in its Piney Hills Gallery from.
The reception for “Wintery Masterpiece Mix” was held inside the gallery, which is located in the foyer of the Dixie Center for the Arts, located at 212 N. Vienna St.
Piney Hills Gallery, a project of NCLAC, is a consignment sales gallery for original works of art from approximately 30 artists and crafts people in north central Louisiana.
Inventory ranges from the fine arts of oil and watercolor painting to the contemporary crafts of pottery and jewelry making to the more traditional folk crafts of basketry and quilting.
Following its recent semiannual meeting of the selection committee, NCLAC will introduce and honor two new regional artists who’ve been juried into the gallery: Margie Bottoms of Bienville and BEVERLY DUDLEY of Ruston.
Bottoms creates representational artwork characterized by still lifes and landscapes. She is inspired by the region.
Dudley, too, creates still lifes and landscapes, but her primary focus is portraits, which she paints on commission.
She has quite a lot of experience in this realm. In fact, one of her proudest moments as a portrait artist came in 1993 when she completed a portrait of the first lady of Mississippi, Pat Fordice.
Dudley works in pencil, charcoal and oil.
She was self-taught until she and her husband moved temporarily to Bellevue, Wash., in 1985.
There she fell in love with the paintings of late Russian impressionist Sergei Bongart.
“The vibrant color palette he used seemed to glow,” she said.
Bongart inspired her, and she began to study with one of his proteges Ron Lukas at The Artist Workshop in Seattle.
Under his influence, she watched her work transform.
“I felt I’d won the Art Lotto,” she said.
Dudley shared her thoughts on being an artist and being accepted to the gallery.
“It’s always an honor when a gallery accepts your paintings, and you should treat it as such,” she said.
Dudley looks forward to the reception, as she has each time her work has been accepted to a gallery.
“You gain knowledge with every piece of art you come in contact with,” she said.
“And you are surrounded by the absolute best mixture of personalities.”
About her art, Dudley said, “My art is not a hobby.
“My art is not a job. My art is my life!”
Today, Dudley will share a piece of her life with the public, as will Bottoms and the other Piney Hills Gallery artists.
While today’s reception will offer local residents a unique opportunity to meet the gallery’s artists and get to know other area arts enthusiasts, NCLAC encourages people to stop by the gallery any time.
Business hours are from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday, Thursday and Friday.
April Honaker is the associate director of the North Central Louisiana Arts Council.
