WHAT DO I WANT MY PAINTINGS TO DO?
Halt you in your tracks and invite you to pay attention to what they evoke for you. Awaken you and cause you to wonder. Next, prompt you to notice how we’ve connected through art. Then, compel you to own the work and put it where you’ll re-experience the zap. Finally, I want my paintings to be the cause of some happiness for as many people as possible.

WHAT ABOUT THE PAINTING?
Starting with the wish to benefit, my experiences, feelings, memories, dreams and meditations fuel my painting. Expressionistic in style, the images are both figurative and abstract. When I begin a painting, I rarely have a fixed goal in mind. In fact, through painting I intend to lose my controlling mind. What I always find is that the results are more dynamic when the process is spontaneous. The water-based acrylic and tempera media I prefer are vivid and sensual. Some paintings include graphite and oil pastels. I shift the brushes between both hands to maximize freedom and minimize fussiness. For me, the process of painting is a lot like dancing. Sometimes a color leads. Then the form takes over. Lights are adjusted. My turn to lead, mostly I follow. Back and forth. Swing out, swing in. The painting stops when I notice the dance keeps going without me. Now, it’s your turn.

HOW’D I GET HERE?
Like lots of women artists before me, I committed myself to art mid-span. Even though encouraged by others since childhood, my ideas about what it took to be a "professional" artist delayed my commitment to doing art. Throughout school I was rewarded for my art skills; I first exhibited at age 15 in the Laguna Arts Festival. The Redondo Beach High School yearbook was my first illustrated publication. I cartooned through college, and earned money as a part-time graphic artist while helping raise our daughter. Studying art at the University of California at Santa Barbara, I continued my education at such schools as the San Francisco Academy of Art and the San Francisco Art Institute. In the early 80’s I discovered painting. I have been working steadily with Peninsula artist and teacher, Barbara Clark, ever since.

WHAT’S HAPPENING?
Three decades-plus after the Laguna Arts Festival, I began exhibiting my paintings publicly in the San Francisco Bay Area in the early 90’s. Chiefly because I joined the Artists’ Guild of San Francisco, I have been able to make my living through selling my artwork. To reach even more people, NextMonet produces limited editions of my art and offers them through their website, NextMonet.com. It so delights me that my original paintings and giclees are collected in Africa, Europe, Japan, Australia, as well as New York and Bakersfield. Thanks for being part of the complex net of life that made this success happen.
