Artist Statement

Artist Statement for Catherine Botch

Art is play- the possibilities, “the what ifs”,diverse perceptions!
Ideas come and haunt me till I can reveal them through my Art.

As an artist, I am pulled to observe and examine then document, translate, interpret, affect and effect through my perception and understanding of what takes place around me. From Order, I make Chaos then, ascertain a path to Reorder into a new visual statement. Art becomes an adventure inviting discovery, an intriguing problem or a puzzle calling me to unravel and explore.

I enjoy working in a variety of media. I pick the one that will best portray what I wish to tell. My work tends to use mixed media, lately.
The collage influence is becoming stronger. I enjoy using the traditional formats and bringing it to the new technology of today. Textiles and Quilting have always been very mathematically based, lending itself to the digital format of today’s technology, fused with the artistic use of color theory. Quilting also is based in the compositional qualities used in collage, replacing paper with cloth. Textile Sculptures use the idea of mixing materials for contrast and embellishment. I use these basic qualities to make the process Fine Art, thereby taking it beyond the utilitarian qualities of yesterday.

Challenging perception, illusion, surreal and fantasy themes are complemented by optical illusion or portrayed to look as if you could find it anywhere. They do exist- in my mind. I am drawn to the use of the push / pull effect of complimentary colors to give depth and vibration which can be manipulated into optical illusion, to trick the eye into seeing beyond the concrete vision or enhance the depth of a form.

Combined, this all blends into a description of the idea that pesters to become reality and live in the real world.

The Garden:
A positive experience for L.C. inmates
By Cheryl Baker
Press writer
Director of Education at the Allentown Art Museum, Lynn Berkowitz, and Prison Program Coordinator, Becky Duke-Walker discussed a project three years ago that might elicit changes to addictive criminal behavior. The resultant project was
"The Garden." However, "Art Talks" began the path that led to The Garden project.
Emmaus action artist and educator, Barnaby Ruhe, was the Museum's first educator at the facility, according to Berkowitz. Art Talks, developed in 1998 when it was first presented at the Lehigh County Prison for inmates, has become a weekly program aiming to improve inmates' self-esteem.
The project enables inmates to "look at, reflect upon, write about and discuss the different formal properties of art-color, texture, line, form, etc., of posters and book images," according to a synopsis printed by Berkowitz.
She added that Art Talks provides a meaningful program at no cost to the facility and accomplishes many things for the inmates including developing critical thinking skills, observation and communication skills.
The Garden Project, an outgrowth of Art Talks was, according to Berkowitz, designed to provide tools for self-expression and cultivate a sense of accomplishment. Artist-in-Residence, Rosemary Geseck (also known
locally for her mural work, including the walls of downtown Allentown's Federal Grill and Crocodile Rock), and Museum Educator, Catherine Botch, taught 11 inmates the basics of impressionist-style landscape painting.
During a recent reception at the Museum to celebrate the murals, Lehigh County Prison Warden, Edward Sweeney, said the Garden project provides an opportunity for the inmates to complete a project they can see being appreciated by others and themselves. He stressed the importance of the intrinsic value of self-worth and referred to the same values desired to be instilled in children.
"It's an opportunity for the inmates to feel positive," said Sweeney, adding that the project was more than simply sitting down and doing art.
"The inmates were involved in presentation of art appreciation and artists," he said.
Inmate Mike Kerak, in the Museum project synopsis, said he enjoyed the class very much and learned how to go from a world of black and white to an exploration of color.
Todd Lipovsky, inmate artist, said the mural program gave him a sense of freedom, while another inmate artist, Bernard Ransome Sr., said it made him want to do something with his life-painting colorful scenes of freedom.
The Garden is a four-part mural that depicts the different seasons of a garden. Three pieces will be permanently installed at the Lehigh County Prison and one mural will become part of the Museum's Educational Services Department collection of artist-in-residence works.
