Artist Statement -

Constantine Cionca (1955, Romanian born, United States) is an artist who works in a variety of media. On his conceptual digital work Cionca tries to approach a wide scale of subjects in a multi-layered way that generates diverse meanings. By studying sign processes, signification and communication, he creates intense personal moments masterfully created by means of rules and omissions, acceptance and refusal. This results in the fact that the artist can easily imagine an own interpretation without being hindered by the historical reality.
&<8232;”I think of my digital work as blending manipulated collage of fragments: objects, drawings, paintings, photographs. They are improvisational images that question our&<8232; making of the art through language and knowledge. My digital project has always been grounded in pleasure and aesthetics”.
His digital works question the conditions of appearance of an image in the context of contemporary visual culture. By applying abstraction, he tries to increase the dynamic between audience and author by objectifying emotions and investigating the duality that develops through different interpretations.
His works doesn’t reference recognizable form. The results are deconstructed to the extent that meaning is shifted and possible interpretation becomes multifaceted. Constantine Cionca currently lives and works in New York.

PRESS RELEASE

CONSTANTINE CIONCA
RECEIVES SPECIAL RECOGNITION

Artist CONSTANTINE CIONCA of BRONX, NEW YORK has received five “Special Recognition” Merit Awards for the artwork entitled “Agony”, “Church”, “Revelation”, “Holy Tree” “Last Supper” in the "9th Annual Judeo-Christian International Juried Online Art Exhibition” hosted by www.upstreampeoplegallery.com.

This international exhbition received over 500 entries from around the world and 97 artists were selected by the juror Larry Bradshaw, Professor of Art at the University of Nebraska at Omaha.

Professor Bradshaw states this about three of these specially recognized work:

“Constantine Cionca of Bronx, NY masters the digital media to achieve some very rich expressions. In the work “Agony” the diagonallity, the textural treatment with “X” markings and rope-like passages together with the somber earth tones dramatize the message. The layering of the images of the Pieta, the large overlay of the rough crown of thorns image, the blessing Christ figure all within a church setting reinforces integral parts of the New Testament. Also wonderful is the work entitled “Holy Tree” in its candelabra formation. Scenes of the apostles at table with the chalice and bread are nicely arranged in the work “Last Supper”. The high key tonality of “Revelation” is also nicely done with the eye and hand of God reaching down onto the theme of the Last Supper with images of icons lightly presented, all add to awe of it all.”

The exhibition will be on display online in April at www.upstreampeoplegallery.com and continue for 12 months, closing March 31, 2008.

Further information in the artist’s own words regarding three of her awarded works:

“Agony” –is a computer-generated artwork. This composition is inspiring from Christian belief and use of biblical subject, Christ’s crucifixion. The composition represent a deeply torn position of body, a self-falling as a separation of matter from spirit. Technically is a combination of different images using Photoshop, cropping, and placing them into different layers with different grade of alpha effects.

“Holy Tree” or the Joshua tree is a computer-generated artwork. The composition is a response to the learning about the tree’s religious meaning the remembrance of the time when two separate groups have united for the common purpose. This composition is a montage in Photoshop of three separate images combined them using alpha layers.

“Revelation”, is a composition represented the open gate to Christianity. At the last supper Jesus make known to his disciples that only God law governed the human existence in the world. For the purpose of this digital artwork I used a few scanned photos, then, I place them into new layers using Photoshop program.. I use image adjust, masking and alpha layers. This process alters the images to the stage of intended blend lever of the final composition.”
