Artist Statement -

Every single human being has a Mission. Sometimes we may not be aware of it but, if we are, we must then direct all our energy toward achieving it.
My own mission is to give to all those who come into contact with my artwork, the opportunity to dream about other worlds, to step into dimensions in which everything and anything is possible, to forget their everyday problems. In brief, I want to encourage them to dare to step through the open door of my paintings, and to share the reflection of my inner world in its quest for the mystery of life.
I was born in Buenos Aires in 1956. In my twenties, I moved to the UK (London) where I spent 4 incredible years in which I developed a longlasting admiration for PreRaphaelite and Symbolist painting. On my return to Argentina, I graduated as a Psychologist at the University of Buenos Aires, followed by a Postgrad in Art Therapy. I am permanently seeking answers to eternal questions at whose epicentre is MAN and the reason for his existence. The principles of the Gestalt Theory provide the bases for my artwork, but I also find inspiration in the works of Rudolf Steiner and G C Jung, the films of Andrei Tarkovsky and Alexander Sokurov, the music of Claudio Monteverdi and the voices of Lisa Gerrard and Azam Ali, to name just a few.

Formaiano´s output has the exhuberance and power of Walt Whitman´s poetry. His men are golden, vital, dynamic. The bodies are as beautifully drawn as they are painted, in vivid hues.
Alfredo Cernadas Quesada, The Buenos Aires Herald, November 2002

With a delicate style of painting and an infinity of almost imperceptible brushstrokes, Luis Formaiano creates atmospheres in which insinuating figures lose all gravity, floating and blending into the background. His landscapes are the product of an imagination enriched by cultural sensitivity, while his colours irradiate their own light, ranging from clarity to pregnance. Warm golden hues become oranges and ochres, while light blue becomes so dark they seem to invite the spectator to plunge into the painting. Shapes are barely hinted at, and the landscape is surreal, and so ambiguous that it becomes an invitation to participate, made-to-measure for each spectator.
Once more, Luis Formaiano allows science and art to unite in each painting, sometimes in an attempt to unveil the human soul, at other times, deepening the mystery. Art allows Luis Formaiano to search in the abyss of the soul, much as he does as a professional, by means of Gestalt Psychology, capturing the essence of both human beings and objects. His work is ontological and it possesses a halo of reminiscence for things that cannot be, for his wishes, for unfulfilled dreams, for the illusion of attaining perfection.
Contemplating the exhibition one is reminded of the philosophy of idealism. In his "Treaty on Aesthetics" Benedetto Crocce says that "art is vision and intuition", virtues possessed in full measure by Formaiano.
Review written by the curator of the exhibition "Somewhere", held at Manzana de las Luces Art Gallery, Buenos Aires, July 1998.

An elegant and original catalogue informs us that as well as being a painter, Luis Formaiano is a psychologist, a profession that appropriately helps him in his research into the world of colour. In referring to his knowledge of colour, we are saying that in Formaianos canvases the colour comes before the line, or the design (since he paints according to the principles of the Gestalttheorie). And this is what will most fascinate those who attend this exhbition: their eyes will be able to absorb this chromatic symphony at a glance. And this gives us the measure of an art form that, despite coming from overseas, happily combines the luminosity of bright colours with the liveliness of Italian landscapes in a sensitive homage to his fatherland.
