Object vs Voice
In my current paintings I started by bringing forth detailed attention to the face. Our mirror to the world. Revealing its secrets, moods, thoughts, desires. Telling the story of the person, looked at, so close. The subject. Creating a door through their eyes for one to enter. It felt invasive from the start so, I devised a hiding ploy - stripes mainly, but bubbles and veils too. It gave the face a partial haze to float in, a delay before the impact of our investigation. It brought forward the painting's surface and left the depth available for the face alone.
Then my love for and interest in the narratives in classical art paintings delivered another possibility to add to the story. With a two way option. The interpretation of a subject from a classical painting helping to explain the face and the face returning the favor. In some works the story telling is punctuated by objects interacting with the face. The stripes stayed....
