Artist Statement

Inspired by photographs, I paint portraits of myself, close friends, and a variety of foods in which I consume on a daily basis. These elements are convenient for me to access, but I feel that what is closest to you can define who you are. There is a sense of isolation felt within each piece, which helps to showcase the subject in itís purest form, without any distractions. To help further enforce a strong presence, I choose to work larger than life and include a vast array of detail. It is very important that the image is able to speak for itself, all alone.

My initial intention is to document the subject matter, but my abilities as a realist painter are a crucial element within the overall experience of my work as well. The photo process allows me to set the proper lighting and placement, but instead of simply copying the photographic itself, I strive to locate elements of the subject that may have been flattened by the camera and extenuate the overall depth of the form. The ability to paint from a photograph and somehow enrich the visual experience of the image is the challenge I live for. I believe that the camera is a great tool to capture an image, but it takes paint to tell the true story.
