I start with things I find: pictures, letters, ads, fabric, idea fragments that belong to other people, and then I fill in the blanks with my own story. Working with collage makes me feel like I’m part of something bigger, and like I’m preserving the otherwise forgettable details of humanity in some small way. Schooled in photography and self-taught in painting and the rest, my most influential teachers are guts and sensitivity. My gut jitters when I know its good and sinks when it stinks. Sensitivity makes me vulnerable to emotions and perceptive to life and our history. When I tell people about my artwork I say “There’s a little bit of me in there, there’s a little bit of you in there”.
