These paintings are based on stills from the home movies my father took of our birthday parties. Though the images are of my family and home, my broader interest is in childhood as a place we all came from.
A birthday party is a pretty straightforward event—a chance to get together and have fun. But a child’s private experience of a birthday party contains many complex feelings. Birthdays may heighten a child’s sense of joy and connection, as well as his/her disappointment, anxiety, and alienation.
The newness of a child’s mind makes them more attuned to all that is mysterious and indefinable in their experience. Throughout childhood all the forms of the world are being tested and tried on, and everything is in a state of flux. With this in mind, I intend these images to reflect the emotional and highly imaginative nature of a child’s interior life.
