August 2017, FLOWER POWER the dictators garden, Faust Gallery, Kochi, Japan.
This exhibition explores dichotomy - the strong against the weak, the beautiful facing the monstrous.
Like a garden - with its petals and thorns - there is a spectrum of good and evil within us all. The place we are born, the cards we are dealt, pure happenstance... all of these require shifting and mixing cocktails, light and dark as we navigate the path of life to death.
In the current climate of discrimination and populism, Mulumbaâs paintings depict notorious figures with hopeful colour. They are arranged with gorgeous women, rooted yet delicate.
Contemplating this duality, perhaps we can grow a place where happiness rules. Where tolerance trounces bigotry, virtue tears into materialism, and ultimately, a dream is born in which beasts turn to beauty.
