Artist Statement -

I left a small New Jersey farming community to studied at New York’s Parsons School of Design. Upon graduation I briefly worked for a major advertising agency but found the formula creative environment unsatisfying. I moved back to the Jersey shore and took a job in the display department of a small department store.

Like other artists of the period I enjoyed the dynamic environment of retail and advanced through several positions, finally moving to the San Francisco where I became display director for a national retailer.

During the 1970s and 80s this retailer was noted for groundbreaking merchandising and its many exhibits of design and art. My participation in the creative team’s efforts afforded me the opportunity to travel widely and create collections of contemporary and tribal art.

In 1987 left retail to assist the burgeoning pool of entrepreneurs and non-profit organizations in Northern California. In order to express the long and complex development of my aesthetic philosophy I have devoted most of the last year to the creation of a personal visual language. I find that my work has been shaped by a vast range of stylistic influences, from American Outsider art to European Baroque. Moreover, these influences are not necessarily at conflict within the same work. I would like to continue to develop a truly global aesthetic that expressed the unity of all cultures.

My most recent series is based on works of J. S. Bach and attempts to create a visualization not necessarily illustration of various works.

Artist Exhibitions

As I explained in my artist’s statement, the bulk of my career has been devoted to what might be considered “commercial art.” My art has been primarily exhibited in retail settings. Like Andy Warhol and Emile Norman, I enjoyed developing art for retailers who believed it enriched their sales presentations and created greater interest in their merchandise. Granted, this experience is not equal to a juried exhibition. However, my art has probably been exposed to a far greater audience than the work of a conventional gallery-artist. Moreover, it was not uncommon for the retailers to sell my work from their display windows at customer request. Thus you might say my work was exhibited at Steinbach Co, Asbury Park, NJ. from 1964 to 1966, Macy East from 1967 to 1969 and Macys California from 1969 to 1987....
