Nokey

Nokey was created from half of a child size mannequin and clothed in an oversized vintage prom dress. Red ink has been screen printed throughout the layers of the gown. The dress is pinned directly to her body using vintage pins that belonged to my grandmother. I found them on leftover quilting scraps she used to make me a patchwork quilt when I was a child.
Nokey is a recurring theme throughout my art. She symbolizes my need as a woman and artist to continually move and evolve into a self-actualized person— complete, whole, and balanced. Her continuing metamorphosis and kinetic energy represents a child, once victimized by rape, who has moved from victim to survivor and is becoming this self-actualized, whole and productive person. Nokey is a physical representation of one dealing with the sudden loss of childhood (or childlike innocence) desiring to connect and move into adulthood— an adult able to regain the feelings of childlike honesty and curiosity, while discovering the many facets of being a whole woman and rediscovering the power and the freedom to dance.
Nokey has no face because she represents all victims who are struggling on their journey. With her disconnected mask and constant movement she challenges them to remove their mask and begin moving forward with life, reclaiming it’s beauty and living with a sense of hope, love and trust again.
