Artist Statement -

Painting:
My recent work, paintings on canvas with Acrylic paint, is done in a Semiabstract-Style, my way to express feelings and ideas about anything that touches me: a notion, a situation, a vision, places, people, landscapes, dreams, tension, conflicts etc. etc. In order to express my feelings i often use strong, vivid colors and color contrasts as well as simplified, bizarre forms. Often my paintings show a kind of a phantastic landscape or remnants of a landscape.

Plastic Plankton Installation:
Another kind of my work are recycling-art installations made from plastic waste. Plastic bottles, littering beaches or swimming in the water, inspired my imagination and I started experimenting with the material. In the beginning I found it not very enticing and somewhat unruly. However, after some time of experimenting by cutting, assembling, connecting, folding, molding etc.I liked to work with the PET-material. One day I observed its shadows cast on the wall when exposed to the sunlight. I was fascinated by the sight and imagined to form the plastic, making it look like fragile glass membranes that resembled organic forms. If I could imitate the forming process of glass by heating the plastic that would be exactly what I wanted. So another cycle of experimenting begun and it took quite a while until I found the way to form, cut and colour the material. In the beginning I just liked the different shapes that I could create, now with my new won freedom. But of course, the initial shape of a plastic bottle set some limits. Again some time later I found a way to make bigger or longer forms by connecting them with plastic see through thread.
Inspired by the seabirds that I saw one day, trying to eat plastic particles from broken down plastic bottles, mistaking them for plankton, I developed the idea of forming objects that resembled plankton. Since there are myriads of plankton shapes, there where no limits in forming whatever I liked and I created hundreds of different individual shapes that resembled Mikroplankton, Phytoplankton or Zooplankton. During this process I found out about those gigantic swirling gyres in the ocean, that are collecting plastic waste coming from the shores of many countries. (www.algalita.org). Bill Macdonald, vice president of the Algalita marine Research Foundation, California, says(1): ” In the sea, big pieces of plastic look like jellyfish or squid, while small pieces look like fish eggs.” Once plastic parts swim in the water, a whole vicious cycle starts that can endanger the lives of millions of animals through the food chain and can finally harm even human beings.
British scientists (1) discovered that microscopic pieces of plastic can be found everywhere in the oceans, even inside plankton, the keystone of the marine food chain.
In the Pacific Ocean, between California and Hawaii a carpet of three million tons of plastic waste is drifting on the water. Meanwhile it has reached the size of Central-Europe.
So finally this gave me the idea to assemble my plastik shapes into thick layers that looked similar to thick carpets of Plankton swimming in the water. Those carpets, suspended from the ceiling became part of my installation that I called "Plastic-Plankton".
Finally my plastic-project ended up like something much more than I had initially intended.
By exhibiting the installations I could initiate people reflecting about a huge ecological problem and hint at the vast changes that happen below the water surface of our seas.
In the aftermath of this project I painted those Plastic-Plankton objects, thus creating another level of abstraction and integrating it into my installation.
