This intaglio and drypoint etching, executed in a blend of four colored oil based inks on Stonehenge cream colored paper, was inspired by the silent German film METROPOLIS. I etched the work on two separate zinc plates that each measured four inches high by five inches wide, or 10.160 cm by 12.700cm. The overall visual image measures eight inches high by four inches wide, or 20.320 cm by 12.700cm wide. The paper size is about twelve inches by ten inches wide, or 30.480cm by 25.400cm. Four separate nitric acid baths were required for the final etched design. This work was hand printed by the artist in 2017 at The Center for Works on Paper in Philadelphia. This is a print from the THIRD Edition of Four Editions, and each intimate edition is limited to only five prints. The 1927 film by Fritz Lang entitled METROPOLIS is one of the finest examples of German Expressionist cinema and contributed new levels of fine art to the future and history of film making. This marathon work blends science fiction with religion and politics and takes place in the future year of 2026 C. E. and examines a larger than life urban scenario ruled by billionaire industrialists and corporate kings. The amazing sets were heavily influenced by the visual artistic movements of Futurism, Cubism, and Bauhaus. The script, written by Lang and his wife, Thea von Harbou, starred Gustav Frohlich, Brigitte Helm, Rudolf Klein-Rogge, and Alfred Abel. The groundbreaking special effects were unlike any previously shown in a film. Please note that this etching is shipped to the buyer without a frame or mat. This keeps the price reasonable and also allows the collector a wide range of choice in framing selection. For shipment, a sturdy cardboard box is employed. The etching is first wrapped in two layers of acid free glassine and then placed between two archival boards. This is next placed into the shipping box and securely packed with bubble wrap. The Absolute Arts Dot Com price does not include shipment costs, which are added to the final sale price.
