This surrealistic scene originated with three original drawings by the artist, all based on his original photograph, taken in October 1987 at the Louvre Museum in Paris. According to the Louvre websiteat https www. louvre. fr en oeuvre-notices winged-victory-samothrace, this sculpture is described as, “The winged goddess of Victory standing on the prow of a ship overlooked the Sanctuary of the Great Gods on the island of Samothrace. This monument was probably an ex-voto offered by the people of Rhodes in commemoration of a naval victory in the early second century BC. The theatrical stance, vigorous movement, and billowing drapery of this Hellenistic sculpture are combined with references to the Classical period-prefiguring the baroque aestheticism of the Pergamene sculptors”. The sculpture itself was unearthed in 1863 on the isle of Samothrace, in the northwest Aegean Sea, by Charles Champoiseau. DiFalco integrated a spider web into his scene as a commentary on the woven connections between reality and fantasy, as well as on the dubious nexus between the Divine and the Finite. The Media for this zinc plate etching includes oil base etching inks, RivesBFK white paper, and mulberry bark paper from Thailand. Three baths in Nirtic acid were required to etch this hand printed work. The other etching techniques employed included intaglio, aquatint, and drypoint. This edition is the THIRD of Four.
