Artwork Description:

Full Title is PIRATES ALLEY IN NEW ORLEANS. The inspiration for this Jerry Di Falco original, hand pulled etching originated with one of the artist’s own photographs taken with Kodak black and white film on his Minolta 35mm camera. DiFalco’s etching features Pirate’s Alley in the French Quarter of New Orleans. This lanky side street, located next to the cathedral, has a history of bars, houses of prostitution, and gambling dens for pirates. Oil-based, French ink was used with Rives BFK white paper. Mulberry bark paper from Thailand, treated with methyl cellulose, was utilized in the Chine colle process. The artist’s zinc etching plate measured six inches high by eight inches wide, paper size is eleven inches by fifteen inches. DiFalco employed the STUIO TECHNIQUES of Aquatint, Drypoint, Chine colle, and Intaglio. The etching was hand-printed by the artist in FOUR EDITIONS limited to only FIVE PRINTS PER EDITION. This particular etching is from the FIRST EDITION. Notes on the Chine Colle Process Chine Colle, which translates from French as Chinese pasting, is a process by which colored and treated paper is attached to the etching plate before the printing press rolls. DiFalco mixes Methylcellulose powder with spring water and then paints the resulting clear viscous substance to hand-dyed mulberry bark paper from Thailand, Brand Unryu. In Japan, Unryu translates as CLOUD DRAGON paper because it has long swirling threads of kozo fibers integrated in it, thereby giving the texture and visual effect of clouds. Kozo fibers come the branches of the mulberry bush, specifically the innermost of three layers of bark, which must be removed, cooked, and beaten before the sheets are formed. Kozo is harvested yearly. The treated Thai paper is then allowed to dry overnight and then cut to fit the plate areas where colored areas are desired in the print. These stenciled mulberry-bark papers are first dampened misted with water and placed upon the already inked and wiped etching plate. The printing process continues, and a multi-colored image is created. This hand-done process is a difficult and laborious one. THE PRICE INCLUDES A FRAME and MAT. THIS ETCHING SHIPPED IN A PROFESSIONAL CARDBOARD BOX PACKED WITH BUBBLE WRAP. PLEASE NOTE THAT YOUR ART ARRIVES WIRED AND HEADY TO HANG. A WALL HOOK AND NAIL ARE ALSO INCLUDED.
