Artwork Description:

The full title is, LAS DAMAS DE AVILA or THE LADIES OF AVILA, A PREMONITION OF CIVIL WAR WITH THE ELEMENTAL GHOSTS OF EARTH, AIR, FIRE, AND WATER. The studio techniques used included Intaglio, Aquatint, and Drypoint. I etched four separate zinc plates to create one image. Each plate measures five-inches high by four inches wide. or 12.700cm by 10.160cm, and were placed in two rows of two on the press bed. This placement of multiple plates on the printing press enhances the overall design of the print and also lends the optical illusion of looking at the scene through a window, which is characteristic in many of my etchings. This scene was adaptared from original drawing I made of an Albumen Print, whose title was Avila. Vielles murailles, porte del Alcazar. This photo, taked between 1890 and 1901, if the the colloection of A. D. White, Architectural Photographic Collection, Cornell University, a gift of Charles Manson Remey. The size of my etching, which was executed in oil based ink on Stonehenge Fawn Colored paper measures 15 inches wide by 16 inches high, or 38.100cm x 40.640cm. This etching was hand printed by myself within The Open Printmaking Studio at The Fleisher Center for Works on Paper in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA. This is the SECOND Best Print of Eight from the FIRST Edition of FOUR.
