Full title of this work is, SHRINE OF BAHUBALI SURROUNDED BY VIOLET MISTS. Please note that this etching is shipped and sold to the buyer without a frame or mat. This keeps the price low and also allows the collector a choice in framing. The etching is shipped in a sturdy cardboard box. The print is wrapped in two layers of acid free glassine and then placed between two archival boards. This is next placed into the shipping box and securely packed with bubble wrap. The price from Absolute Arts Dot Com does NOT shipment costs to the collector. However, the sale price does include packing supplies and handling costs. THREE ZINC PLATES, STACKED ON THE PRESS BED IN A VERTICAL TOTEM LIKE DESIGN WAS EMPLOYED TO CREATE THIS IMAGE. This print is number TWO of TEN in Edition TWO. EACH PLATE MEASURES 4 INCHES HIGH BY 6 INCHES WIDE. THE PRINT SIZE IS 22 INCHES HIGH, OR 55.880 cm, BY 10 INCHES, OR 25.400cm. Techniques used include Aquatint, Intaglio, Drypoint, and Chine colle. Oil based etching ink on RivesBFK white paper with mulberry bark color overlay. This work is based on a photograph taken by Edmund David Lyon in 1886 and entitled, Views in Mysore. The full title of my etching is BAHUBALI AWAITS HIS NEXT SACRED ANOINTING IN 2018. Bahubali was the first Jain Saint to attain enlightenment, and this shrine is sacred to the followers of JAINISM. Jainism is traditionally known as JAina dharma, an Indian religion that prescribes a path of nonviolence towards all living beings. The Shravanabelagola temple is located in the Hassan district on top of Vindyagiri Hill, about 50 km Southeast of Hassan, and about 150 km Southwest of Bangalore. It is a famous pilgrimage site and contains a massive statue of Bahubali, the first Jain Tirthankara to have gained salvation. The statue is more than 1000 years old and was erected in 983 AD by Chamundaraya, a general in the army of King Rachamalla. Shravanabelagola literally means the white tank of the ascetic. Shravanabelagola temple is approached by climbing more than 600 steps, which were carved out of the rocky surface of the hillock. On entering the temple, visitors are usually awestruck by the towering statue of Bahubali, who is also known as Gomateshwara, depicted unclothed in the standing position. The 58 foot statue is considered to be the largest monolithic structure in the world, and is sculpted out of grey granite. It dominates the landscape around the area and devotees come to visit Shravanabelagola temple from near and far. Interestingly, the temple is also popular with Hindus as well. But the biggest event at the Shravanabelagola temple is the Mahamastakabisheka, an anointing festival that takes place every 12 years when scaffolding is erected to bathe the statue of with blessed holy water, milk, curd, honey, ghee, turmeric paste, sandalwood paste andother ingredients. The sculpture is then showered with silver and gold coins. The next Mahamastakabisheka is scheduled for 2018.
