Artwork Description:
PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS ETCHING IS SOLD WITH BOTH A FRAME, 12 by 16 inches, AND MAT. THE BLACK PAINTED WOOD FRAME WITH GLASS INCLUDES AN ACID FREE, WHITE MAT. THE WORK ARRIVES TO YOUR HOME WIRED AND READY TO HANG. This original etching is based an Ethiopian manuscript illumination from the Walters Art Museum in Baltimore, Maryland. I completed four drawings in graphite, charcoal, India ink and ballpoint pen preceding this etching’s executio. I first coated my zinc etching plate with a ground of beeswax and mineral spirits and allowed it to dry overnight. The next step involved drawing directly onto the coated plate with etching needles and other tools. When satisfied with my initial design, I placed the plate in a Nitric acid bath and allowed the liquid to eat into, or etch, the exposed lines. A plate cleaning followed along with the pulling of the first print. These steps were then repeated until I reached my desired visual. I also employed the studio techniques of AQUATINT using powdered resin to cause a shading effect. My interests in Christological Reflection, art history, African art, and sacred art inspired me to create this etching. The original MANUSCRIPT GOSPEL PAGE was executed in Northern Ethiopia around 500 BCE. Its consistency in style is seen in the work’s abridged characterization with the face designs and the strong expression of line. The figures appear as columns sheathed in textile designs balanced against one another. Four editions, each one limited to only five etchings, comprise the portfolio for this print. This is the 2nd edition of FOUR. It was executed in my own blend of French, oil-based etching inks done on STONEHENGE brand paper, color-Stone Gray, made in the USA. The image size is nine inches high by six inches wide.
