Artwork Description:

This zinc-plate etching incorporates the studio techniques of INTAGLIO, AQUATINT, CHINE COLLE, and DRYPOINT. It is executed in French, oil based black ink and RivesBFK white paper. This is the second print of five in the SECOND Edition of Three Editions. All THREE EDITIONS are limited to only five prints each. The work was published and hand printed by the artist on a heavy duty Strand press at The Center for Works on Paper in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania US. The image size and size of the zinc plate used measured 8-inches high by 6-inches wide or 20.320cm x 15.240cm. The paper print size is 11-inches wide by 15-inches high or 27.940cm x 38.100cm. This etching was inspired by a photographed self portrait by Frances Benjamin Johnson, who lived most of her life in New Orleans but also had a photographic studio in Washington, DC. Her title for the photo is, Self-portrait as a Bohemian. The work is in the Library of Congress, Prints and Photographs Archives, in Washington, D. C. is Frances Benjamin Johnston. Her full length portrait shows Johnson in her DC studio seated in front of fireplace, facing left and holding a cigarette in one hand and a beer stein in the other, in her Washington, D. C. studio. Call Number LOT 11734-1 item PP. The medium of her work is a photographic print mounted on layered paper gelatin silver photo, 19.7 x 15.7 cm, on mount, 24.1 x 29.2 cm. Johnson was noted for her work with the Carnegie Foundation and her photographs of architecture in the US South. She was born in 1864 and died in 1952. There is a psychic connection between her and DiFalco that is not explainable, and he has created several etchings based on her photography.
