Artwork Description:

This unique etching was inspired by the myth of the Minotaur, a beast that was half man and half bull, in Ancient Cultures. I executed this etching using a zinc plate that measured five inches high by seven inches wide, or 13 cm x 18 cm. The print size is eleven inches wide by ten inches high, or 28 cm x 26 cm. The print measures eleven inches high by twenty-two inches wide, or 27.940 cm x 55.880 cm. My studio techniques included aquatint, drypoint, intaglio, and Chine colle. First, I executed three pencil and ink drawings of this iconic nude to finalize my design for the etching. A black, oil base ink was used and printed onto RivesBFK white paper. A Thai mulberry bark paper and methylcellulose were employed in the Chine colle process. This specific image was used for my first solo museum show in Brazil, at the MUSEU DA PRAIA, Ponta de Mangue, Maragogi, in Alagoas BEACH MUSEUM . An Explanation of the Chine Colle Process: Methylcellulose powder is reconstituted with spring water and then applied to mulberry bark paper from Thailand, Brand Unryu. The treated paper is then allowed to dry overnight, and I cut it exactly to fit the plate areas where I want certain color areas to exist in the print. I create the stencils from heavy-duty acetate and then trace the number of pieces needed to place on the inked and wiped etching plate. The printing paper is then placed over the zinc plate, which is now on the press bed, and then covered with blankets. The manual printing process continues, and I turn the operating wheel that moves the bed. Next I remove the blankets and lift the paper the printed etching with the cut mulberry bark papers now a permanent part of the etching. A multi-colored image on paper results. This hand done process is difficult and time consuming, but well worth the physical expenditures.
