Artwork Description:

I printed and published this edition at The Center for Works on Paper in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Please note that the work is shipped to the collector without a frame or mat. This keeps the price low and gives the collector a wide range of choices in the framing process. A sturdy cardboard box is employed for shipping the work. The etching is first wrapped in two layers of acid free glassine and then placed between two archival boards. This is next placed into the shipping carton and securely packed with bubble wrap. The price includes all handling costs and shipment supplies. Mailing costs are added. This Nitric acid etched print represents the FIRST STATION OF THE CROSS, which depicts Pontius Pilot washing his hands after condemning Jesus to death by crucifixion. I used the traditional etching techniques of intaglio, drypoint, Chine colle and aquatint. The work is executed using a blend of black, violet, and three selected blue inks. I printed on RivesBFK white paper. The Chine colle color overlays employed mulberry bark papers from Thailand. The 14 STATIONS OF THE CROSS narrate the visual story of Christ’s Passion in 14 scenes and act as a meditational tool in Anglican Roman-Catholic Churches. The print size measures 15 inches high by 11 inches wide, or 38cm x 28cm. This print is from the first of three editions. Each edition is limited to ten etchings. This specific scene, which features a Nubian child holding the water for Pilot, was taken from the sculptures in the Church at Rene le Chateau in Southern France, a place of great mysteries. I pictured Christ as a ghost like figure that exists between the realms of both the living and the dead.
