Artwork Description:

The actual title for this intimate and complicated work is, “Magi. . . Awaken ”The etching, which depicts a Romanesque stone carving from the Cathedral of Saint Lazare in France, is based upon a slide Di Falco photographed in 1987 to use in his art history lectures. The sacred building is located in the town of Autun and contains some rather unconventional works of art. He projected the slide directly onto blank white paper and created two individual drawings, both adapted to this zinc plate etching. The Cathedral of Saint Lazare houses several narratives sculpted in stone, each one a rare and captivating carving. The one pictured here shows the Three Kings of the Nativity story as they sleep together in the same bed and covered by one blanket. One of the Magi, the king being touched by an angel’s index finger, opens his eyes widely in surprise as soon as he perceives the angelic presence. The angel points the other index finger toward the night sky directly at The Star Of Bethlehem. Intense feelings of anticipation and excitement fill this simplistic Romanesque carving, and Di Falco captures all of this visually in his design of convoluted lines. Di Falco used French, oil base etching ink and RivesBFK white paper. The only etching process employed was intaglio, and the zinc plate required two baths in Nitric acid. The intimate image size measures only four inches wide by three inches high, and the paper was hand torn to a size of eight to nine inches wide by eight inches high. The work includes an archival mat and a frame that measures about nine by twelve inches. The price includes all packing materials, including the shipment box. This etching will have five editions of five etchings per edition. Moreover, this print is from the First Edition, and is Number Two. Size indicated below is for frame.
