Artwork Description:

This etching shows a view of the Italian town, Matera, as seen through the mouth of a home carved from a cave. This is where the artist’s paternal grandmother was born in the Province of Basilicata, an area that has been inhabited since the Palaeolithic era10th millennium BC. This indicates that Matera is one of the oldest continually inhabited settlements on earth. The zinc etching plate Di Falco employed measures six by nine inches. The studio techniques of intaglio, aquatint, drypoint and Chine collè were employed, and the plate required five separate Nitric acid baths for development. The print size is 15” high by 11 inches wide, and the frame measures 12”x 16”. A blend of four oil base inks were used in this First Edition of Four Editions. Each edition is limited to only five etchings. The printing paper used was RivesBFK white, and a Thai mulberry bark paper treated with methyl celluloseand infused with Japanese kozo threadslends a dark blue color to this work in the Chine colle process.
