I based this 1928 street scene on my original drawings, which were inspired by an image from the New York City Public Library s digital collection. The New Orleans cityscape features SAULS corner grocery store in the French Quarter. My visual elements in this work include an optical play of light and shadow balanced by a unique color scheme. My media included a blend of French, oil base etching inks printed on RivesBFK cream colored paper. I achieved the effect of the orange sky with the Chine colle technique, a process that attaches a hand cut and stenciled mulberry bark paper from Thailand to the etching plate during the printing. This hand dyed paper is infused with Japanese kozo threads and hand treated with methyl cellulose. I hand printed and published this edition at The Center for Works on Paper in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, courtesy of The Fleisher Art Campus and The Open Studio in Printmaking.
