Artwork Description:

The full title is CHARTRES STREET IN BLACK AND WHITE. This intaglio and aquatint etching by Gerard Jerry DiFalco is adapted from a photograph by Howard Coleman, born in 1883 and died in 1969. The Title of Coleman s photograph, which also pinpoints the exact location in New Orleans of the scene, is Chartres Street from the Lower Pontalba Building Gallery to Victors Cafe, Corner of Toulouse Street. DiFalco uncovered this antique image by Coleman in the Tulane University Library, Thelma Hecht Coleman Memorial Collection. One Di Falco trademark in etching, in addition to his obsessive attention to detail in line work, involves the way he blends the artistic genres to produce a painterly work on paper. His ink wiping techniques and use of several tools, endow his etchings with a monoprint appearance. The zinc plate measured eight inches wide by six inches high, which is also the image size of 20.320cm by 15.240cm. The matted and framed work measures eleven inches by fifteen inches, or 27.940cm by 38.10. This etching is executed in black oil base ink and printed on RivesBFK white paper. It was hand pulled by the artist at the Center for Works on Paper in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. THE PRICE INCLUDES A FRAME and MAT.
