Artwork Description:

This work by Di Falco is a mixed media and mixed genre creation that employed the use of printmaking -- etching on a zinc plate developed in Nitric acid baths -- and painting with watercolors and gouache. The scene depicts Camac Street, one of the oldest streets in the USA, which gained a notorious reputation among the Philadelphia gentile class because of the presence of private boxing clubs, gypsy tea leaf reading rooms, gay and lesbian bars, boarding houses for actresses, brothels, and private artists clubs, some of which still exist today. The family of actors, The Barrymores, kept a mansion there. Moreover, stops on the Underground Railroad reportedly once existed here in a tavern cellar. Even the spelling of the street s name holds a mysterious component in that the spelling remains identical both forward and in reverse. Witch covens supposedly operated here decades before the Civil War.
