  • Artists Describing Their Art:

Gunnel Watkins - My intention is to experience creative expression inside the context of the transpersonal. transaEURC/peraEURC/sonaEURC/al/transE^pEtmrsEtmnl/ Adjective: Of, denoting, or dealing with states or areas of consciousness beyond the limits of personal identity. Dj Whelan - Through the improvisational ideals of vernacular architecture, I've been exploring issues of loss, necessity, social function and creativity as they pertain to homelessness. The small dwellings I construct from bits of earth and recycled materials are inspired by the creative housing solutions of outsiders, squatters and displaced populations, and suggest the random yet deliberate order of building a home when the means of shelter are left to chance and inspired necessity. In an effort for survival and self-expression, man-made objects are married to nature, form and function overlap by default, and home comes together piece by piece. ...

Dj Whelan - Randall Fox - I am interested in making visual statements about the interaction of time, history, cultures, memory, intellect, intuitions, experiences and the spiritual, in and on the human creative process. Robert Pulley - A friend told me recently that it was helpul for her to know how an art work is created and how the artist thinks. That led me to consider what I have to say about my art work. When one looks at my sculpture I hope one sees strength, mystery, sensuousness, spiritual energy and more. How these constructions in modeled clay can stir such responsed in myself and others is a mystery to me, but I can say something about my methods and way of thinking. I have always been intuitive, reactive and spontaneous. I love improvisation, expression and the power of chance and serendipity. This may not seem obvious in large pieces that must be carefully crafted over weeks or months. Here is how it works. When I began the first pieces in this body of work many years ago they were purely improvisational. I would begin each piece with a flat slab of clay that I cut into a shape that would be the bottom of the sculpture. I usually had a vague idea of the proportions I wanted. This general notion set the theme within which I worked. In the manner of free jazz I would consider ...

Louise Parenteau - ARTISTIC STATEMENT I studied fine arts at the University Of Quebec In Montreal (1986-1991). I was involved in various artistic activities in which I took a strong stand against injustice, poverty, and social exclusion. My work took shape using different methods of research and observation. I articulated my artistic approach inspired by existential human sufferings. I created portraits of individuals with unusual physical traits, expressions, deformities, attitudes... These characters inspired me to use colour in contrasts and splashes. My aim was to express the life animating the characters by an internal light. For my installations, I used a physical space to transpose socio-political situations and dramatic events. With the barest resources, my intention was to stimulate the interest of the viewer. My material supplies: Acrylic, rubbish, wood, metal, rust, polystyrene panels, personal objects, used clothing, etc. In 1995, I realized that I had reached limits with my artistic approach. I decided to have a period of questioning with the aim of going further in my research in terms of intention and expression. This process enabled me to explore, to experiment with different materials and to reposition myself using sculpture as my main form of expression. Ever...

Mircea Popescu - Mircea Popescu Statement In my work time is an active element. I paint like I build a sculpture using simple forms, lines and textures representing days, hours and archetypes such as: books, letters, numbers or primordial elements. The surface; canvas, wood, or paper is painted from dark to light, a technique used in the byzantine art. Using classical principles, the golden section, the structures of my compositions are based on rigorous diagrams of simple geometric figures. Considering that contemporary art is characterized by invention and experimentation, texture becomes an essential element of my paintings that comes naturally from the way the paste is applied, transparent layers of paint creating new surfaces. Light is the most surprising element in my paintings which is a result of my technique; the method I mix the primary colors, pigments and other substances What is interesting, not all of them contain the same light, but all of them radiate energy. ...

Don Dougan - My work comprises both abstracted and figurative imagery executed in a variety of mixed materials, with stone being the predominate medium. Other materials used (usually in conjunction with stone) include foundry cast metals, carved and joined wood, cast and fabricated plastics, cold-worked and kiln-formed glass, cast and carved hydraulic cements, cast/formed paper, welded/fabricated metals, gilding, and found/assembled objects. The more abstracted imagery is worked in pedestal pieces, large freestanding sculptures, and in wall-mounted relief sculptures. The figurative lip series is usually presented in wall-mounted reliefs, deep shadowbox framing, and occasionally as either a pedestal piece or a large freestanding work. The most recently begun series of work comprises pedestal-sized pieces using the imagery of the ship or the boat hull. Each series or each type of work allows me to express aspects of the human condition - the more abstracted works tend to reveal a more universal emotional/rational characterization of subject matter, the lip series tends to allow sensuality, humor, and more visceral expressions, while the ship series delves into personal/cultural memories and emotional journeys. Gary Chris Christopherson - Abstract sculpture by GChris is what he terms "progressive art" and is mission-driven. Progressive art is art with a purpose and artist as advocate. "Art as advocacy; advocacy as art." The call to artists and people generally is to embrace both art and advocacy, use their synergy, and advance progressive values. Advanced by the art are core progressive values - reducing human vulnerability, maximizing human potential, saving our environment, and living at "peace on and with the earth." Underlying it all is the driving desire to "save the world", as best as we as people can. Toward that end, GChris abstract mobiles and stabiles help drive toward a positive progressive vision of the future. They portray strong driving forces -- the desire for knowledge, spirit and justice. High level thought, being, and positive interrelationships are not ends but new foundations from which progress springs. Progressive art supports the continuous striving for absolute knowledge, absolute spirit and perfected being with full recognition this is an inevitable, unending, inspiring and liberating human enterprise. To achieve the vision, they also help explore threats of vulnerability, conflict, and chaos. The mobiles and stabiles address these threats, glean whatever positives they contain, and advocate major progression...

Jim Collins - Jim Collins is primarily a Public Art sculptor working in a figurative manner. His sculpture style has been characterized by the use of silhouettes of people and animals constructed of stainless steel, aluminum, and other metals, best exemplified by his long running series the WATCHER. The peaceful figure of the seated man has progressed over the years and can be found in both public and private collections in the United States and Ireland with the majority located in the Southeastern United States. Colorful silhouettes of figures and animals can be seen from the Emerald Isle with large cows along freeways to Firemen and Dalmatians in Plano Texas with the latest additions in Balbriggan Ireland and Colorado Springs. Recently Collins has added complex polychrome enamel painting to selected silhouettes, i.e. the female figure. "Rejoyce" is the newest silhouette in natural brushed finished aluminum with powder coat and enamel. More examples can be seen at www.collins3d.com. His mixed media collages with assemblage frames are somewhat challenging in that the art is not finalized until the viewer completes it. In general, there is no prearranged single story, idea, or philosophy inherent in the work. Because the work is made of...
