Artists Describing Their Art:

John Northington - I have always looked at materials as a representation of a place in time. This idea about materials comes directly from the way I have learned to organize history. I place stone in the far past or in ancient times , I look at metal and consider it to be now and I put glass or plastic as future materials, Wood seems to be linked with history. I feel I have to link materials to a time period to better understand them, this idea is a way for me to understand what I am looking at. I have always found inspiration by the way sculpture moves or changes over time. I have always been fascinated by the Archeological find, to uncover something to never been seen in modern times or forgotten until it was discovered . I have always seemed to find a way to use something that has been overlooked and recycle the material over and over. My work develops from Geology, the Archeological discovery and the work ethic from Ancient Times. ...

Richard Hinger - As a self-taught assemblagist/sculptor, I create vibrant and provocative works of art from the products of man's throw-away culture. I search for commonplace discarded objects and discover unique resources containing collectibles and relics to utilize in the sculptures which then become part of a thematic series. Like the objects I work with, my themes vary considerably, but the common thread of my work is the urgency of visual statements concerning American consumerism, environmental awareness, political icons, and the media's steady search for the newest sensation. Though my work is serious in nature, with the infusion of color, texture, and content, it maintains a whimsical and seductive perspective on Western culture. ...

Lila Goldner - "When faced with a lack of purposeand direction, let us expand capacity of observance, increase possibility of learning and understanding, let us be ready to face the moment when the tasks set before us will be beyond our power.Let us rob the moment of eternity that belong to us and sink into oblivion" ...

Andrew Wielawski - Art must communicate ideas and have them received the way the artist intends, reaching as many viewers as possible to provoke an emotional response. If you go for those who are in the know about artistic periods, about current trends, and about a symbolic language that requires training to understand, then the artist will miss a huge audience. The artist then becomes a slave to styles created by others. If on the other hand, you work towards reaching multiple levels of viewers, then your task becomes more difficult, and at the same time, more fulfilling. An artist who creates a language will not fit into any already existing niche, and will alienate those looking for something they already know about, like gallerists, collectors and museums. Creativity, however, is like water...it will find its way around such obstructions, and bring the artist satisfaction and a clientele that appreciates what they create without regard for what's in fashion. Most of all, this way of producing reflects the rarity of truth in a world mostly dedicated to superficial values. ...

Plamen Yordanov - I share the idea of an art that creates reality instead of offering its conventional model. I want to provoke the birth of view that go beyond the boundary of reality itself. These viewpoints stress an order that exist "a priory" in nature and can be developed again and again. This aspect makes the picture exist as a signal that gives the onlooker a chance to go deep into his/her life experience and mind. This is a universal signal to which the individual responds in un unique manner and creates his/her own reality. ...

Steven Derks - Artist Statement: Color field Paintings & Gridscapes My work is best described as accidental beauty or Shibui as the Japanese call it. It's my job to reconstruct those accidents with diverse methods yet a consistent result. The two most important tools in my work are a stick to push and pull paint around, and the sun, to accelerate the drying. The desert is the perfect place to make this work. While the painting is in the sun cracking and crazing may happen. Placing a painting in the sun to dry is similar to putting ceramics in a kiln. I can anticipate the results but I can't always predict what will happen. Picasso used to say, " Painting is stronger than me. It makes me do things I normally wouldn't do". I'm influenced by Turners skies, Rothko's compositions, and Richter's method of pulling paint. STEVEN DERKS ...

Leonard Bey - The urge to know self has been the key role to explore the real and unrealworld.Through this exploration I have come across so many people, nature, culture etc. of the world and thus has become part of my works either in the form of paintings or in sculptures.......

Stefan Van Der Ende - My sculptures are Solutions for Non/existing Problems . Now is the time to collect them. They are rare and unique ,and there are not many of them , also due to the big amount of time it takes to make the biggerones in wood and stone . They are made dreaming/thinking and working intensively , whith the intention to be able communicate emotion through their abstract/associative visual appearence which relate to subconcious processes in the human mind .(specialy mine ofcourse ) There are often more pictures of one sculpture , because ,as you know you have to see sculptures from more sides , to get a good impression .
