The golden light becomes stronger as it shows
the silhouettes of orange rock in the dried landscape.
Lines formed from endless winds begin to form
and the first rays beam across the high desert.
Through boulders shaped like oval windows
where light begins its golden show in the stillness
until the first bird begins the chorus of life
a rabbit darts across sage and cactus
and a collard lizard licks a stone
waiting for the first heat of the morning.
The rocks come alive as the yoke rises
and a hawk soars over the grazing pronghorns
and the coyote winds through the maze of brush
near the buzz of a hermetic rattler coiled
in the sand next to a shaded rock.
As the day begins the formations bestow
their pure amazement to everything
willing to behold them. The wind blows
an ever slight song through the formations
slowly carving the next masterpiece.
