Artwork Description:
In me they see their own daughters
Just as ignorant, unmindful
Of truth and hopes
Brought to America.
They see daughters
When their mothers talk in Chinese
Grow impatient
Who think they are stupid
When they explain things in fractured English
They see
That joy and luck
Do not mean the same thing
to their daughters
“joyluck” is not a word.
They see grandchildren
Born without hope
Passed from generation
to generation
They see
I don’t know anything about my mother
I don’t know anything.
