The painting is based on a photo titled �Opening of Hannan�s, Brown Hill� cc 1894FromTechnological Survey Of The Golden MilePublished byWestern Australian School of MinesThe scene is most likely the beginnings of the main shaft at Hannan�s Brown Hill. This shaft is located on the Golden Mile in Kalgoorlie and became a very rich gold producer from high-grade ore. The mine was still operating in the 1960�s from what I can recall and indeed I was involved in mining the last remnants of the crown pillars over the stopes in the early 1970�s by open cut.
