Artist Statement -

As an artist I have three goals - to distort, deconstruct, and alter perceptions within my reality by the use of any means.

- Christina Gattorno

The Art:
I usually pick subjects that are either of an experimental or cultural behavioral nature. Most of my work begins more as a sculpture would, by this I mean I create something solid, then if needed I add a canvas which I paint accordingly. I use props; in fact I have a collection. Props can be anything, whatever I find interesting, or useful for future pieces. I only use a prop once then it is discarded.

I spend months, even years, photographing EVERYTHING - from someone sitting on a bench to a wrapper on the floor. I consider my photographs also part of my prop collection. My work is a multimedia puzzle; the trick is pasting everything together until it makes sense. Then I deconstruct and abstract it. It's funny looking at a finished piece; it looks easy, simple, and pure. So I would have to say that my thrill isn't in the finished piece, but in the process.

The Artist:
Christina Gattorno was born in New York City in 1972. She grew up internationally between New York City, Florida, Europe, and Mexico City. After viewing a Bergman film in an art museum at the age of ten, she began obsessively studying film and cinematheque along with modern art. This began a weekend ritual of cinematheque and art gallery visits.

By the 1980's, Warhol and his contemporaries had become a Pop Culture phenomenon. While other children of her generation were involved in John Hughes films and other 80's icons, she followed the cinematheque genre. Such films were only shown in art galleries and museums. During these visits, she became fascinated by several modern artists But is was Vincent Van Gogh who opened her eyes to not just modern art, but all art in general. Thanks to her mother, she was able to travel and feed all of her artistic passions from an early age. The ritual of weekend cinematheque (now known as independent cinema) and gallery/museum visits continues to this day.

Currently, she is working on a film deconstructing T.S. Eliot's "The Wasteland".

Christina resides in West Palm Beach, Florida.
