Artist Statement -

I work in various media: oil, watercolor, dry pastels, pen and ink and mixed media. My work is a result of a fragmented view of the world, which gives it a surreal quality. However, my process is not surreal, because I start with a definite theme that I wish to investigate.
My main area of interest is people and the human form and I am constantly investigating the physical, intellectual, emotional and spiritual aspects of Man.
Over the years I have developed various series, which I revisit periodocally, investigating different aspects.
In purely visual terms, what fascinates me is light and form and how I can use diverse visual elements in a complementary way, opposing, for instance, line and form, or rough and smooth textures. The use of diferent materials to achieve diverse expressions, either alone or as mixed media, along with alternating between a graphic representation and a painterly one, or mixing the two, is a very important aspect of the way I materialize my thinking into images.
Equally important is the transition from very realistic images to a totally abstract means of expression and alternating between control and expressiveness.

Planeta Magazine, São Paulo 1976 and 1977

"Here is a painter that, rather than attracting our attention, wins our immediate cordial and curious interest.
His drawings require minute exploration, in which details are the hiding places where he disguises allusions and beckonings, replete with notations that suggest much to those that know how to see and understand.
Philip Hallawell is English. At first sight, it is fatal to think of William Blake, due to his mystical and romantic taste of the world which he creates in a phantasy, enriched by adventures: themes that border the erotic, softened by delicate, musical, diaphanous grace.
Master of subtle drawing that penetrates the intimate of the characters of his comedy, he combines them in delicious edens and, as said before, win our immediate attention."
Pietro Maria Bardi - Director, São Paulo Museum of Art (MASP), Catalogue presentation, André Gallery, 1976.

"A SURREAL PROMISE IN THE NEW GENERATION Unfortunately, Surrealism and Fantastic Art have become fads. Even young brides are surrealizing. Fantastic fruit, leaves and beings inhabit the salons. There never is a lack of news in salons for young painters, where dozens of surreal figures and diabolical intentions are present. Surrealism, terror and even the own Devil have never been so demoralized. The truth is that since the last great fase of surrealism - that is at least 40 years ago - the genre has become more anaemic. In spite of this, the narrative of other realities continues as aliva as always. Philip Hallawell, for example, is an artist of rare ability. His exhibition shows drawings and paintings ellaborated in a fantastic ambience and in a special reality.
His figures are women, elemental beings, timeless animals, desires and an imagination inhabited by various images. We are in that line of the fantastic where, again, an artist searches for a vein of inspiration and truth. Is this road spent up? And what are Philip's possibilities?
Philip Hallawell is one of those artists whose presence finally imposes itself, such is his individuality and narrative ease. His work presents this possibility and ease. In truth the greatest danger that threatens Philip is not some malign spirit from the 4th dimension, but his technical ability which may be misconstrued as Art by himself. He has many interesting works, but in some he has allowed the theme, the story, to have excessive credit. And that can lead to the scenography substituting his creative and interpretative capacity.
I imagine that we have in this artist one of the best possibilities of the new generation. However, he must work a lot, reject some works and simplify, avoiding appearances. And be reserved in his expression.
I know his work will sell. And in the pleasing and the buying resides, sometimes, the public's tacit orientation as to the roads of the artist. I hope Philip resists.
His work is based on drawing and on his perception of the limits of the figure and the planes. His narrative delves into a search for visual values, and, when discovered, the artist ellaborates a visual story. In fact, the visual sense is clear in his work, even when the artist narrates his personal experiences. He is a young man who has appeared with vigour and intuition and who always takes the visual viewpoint. We hope that his next exhibition maintains this same fidelity to the values of Art and expression."
Jacob Klintowitz, Jornal da Tarde (São Paulo, Brazil) 05/31/76

INTERNATIONAL FLASH - ......The first impact on the spectator is provoked by Philip Hallawell's technique. It is precise, clear, distinct. The second impact is created by his personal universe, worked in a surreal way, in each of his works. Erotism is interwoven with ideas of aggression and pain, which confront us with the principle of reality (pleasure/pain), truer than ever.....
Antonio Zago, Status Magazine (São Paulo, Brazil) August 1984

THE FANTASTIC ENGLISHMAN - Philip Hallawell exhibits pen and ink drawings and oils on canvas at the Galeria André. Still young but with a good base of work behind him, he exercises his creative potential freely. This revelation is exposed in all his work. The artist researches the vast world of real, surreal, fantastic and natural appearances and transposes into visual language the results of his forays into the unconscious universe. Excellent draughtsman. Opens tomorrow, the 25th at 9 p.m.. Galeria André, Al. Jaú 1795.
