Mert Ulcay - Mert Ulcay was born in Istanbul, Turkey in 1974. After studying to obtain a Bachelor of Economics in Istanbul, he moved to Italy and successfully completed a Masters Degree in International Economics and Management in Milan. He started his painting studies in 1996 with Mehmet Guleryuz (one of Turkey's leading contemporary painters) at his Bilsak Atelier in Istanbul. He moved Sevinc Altan in 2000, who was a former assistant to Mehmet Guleryuz, opening two exhibitions with her atelier. His works were chosen by the Cagdas Sanat Committee in 2001, for an exhibition with other "up and coming artists" at the Contemporary Art Center in Istanbul. In 2003, he participated in the "International Art Action for Peace" exhibition, with several leading painters in Turkey and moved to Stuttgart, Germany, where he now lives and works, painting from his own atelier. Mert Ulcay's paintings can be described as being emotional, somewhat introvert and very figurative. Elizabeth Frank - My artworks begin with fallen aspen branches. I make at least one trip annually to the mountains of the southwestern United States to gather the aspen that I'll use over the course of the year. My visits to the forest are like a pilgrimage. Every time I return I'm inspired by the strength and the delicacy of the natural world. After the aspen is collected it's dried in a room on my studio roof. Once dry, I cut and shape the rough branches with a band saw. Next I make a puzzle of all the odd parts. I spread them out on the floor, stack them up on a table and move them around until everything fits. The pieces are carved in small components that are joined together with pegs and nails. The surface is painted with acrylic, metal leaf and wax. I combine my carvings with found objects. The carving style is simple, inspired by iconic images found in folk, tribal and primitive art. The themes I use are personal yet universal. My love of the natural world and my concern for the environment translate into works about the intricate relationship between man and nature. I ...

Yuming Zhu - I land my brush with the force of a giant rock splashing into the ocean. I am not looking for a beautiful painting, but to express Life itself. Painting is just like a stacking of passions. Painting is a method of striping myself naked and facing the truth of my inner emotion. I invite the viewer to experience through my paintings the joy of being alive right at this moment. I believe I can do lots of things, but painting and poetry are the best beloved channels to express my complicated emotions. Originally from Shanghai, Yuming began studying under the masters at a young age. After his BA from China, Yuming came to the States and graduated from Sonoma State University with his MA in 1991.
