Artwork Description:
The concept of myth changes from generation to generation. In ancient Greece, we had Gods and Goddesses and in the middle ages, we had saints and sinners. But in the cinema, particularly in the 1960s, we started to see ant-heroes, outsiders, mavericks, and also the emergence of cinema Icons to reflect our anxieties and desires. This series of paintings explore these different aspects of contemporary myth but also the patina of cinema photos which take on an individual texture and identity as the paper image deteriorates.
Bonnie and Clyde became the original outlaws who defied the law and the banks who repossessed people s property. This was partly true but also false, and that is the essence of myth, this mixture of truth and falsehood. The painting makes use of archival photographs and more glamorous cinema still to contrast this duality.
