Artwork Description:
This artwork is inspired by the poem Pregón en llamas by puertorrican poet, Carmelina Vizcarrondo. This poem takes place in the 30 s in Puerto Rico when sugar mills still existed. The burning of the sugar canes meant that el tiempo muerto has started, this signifies that the field workers had no jobs for six months causing an increase in disease, hunger and deaths in the island. The poem is very descriptive and has a somber feeling to it. It was inspiring in the way the poet described the whole scene as a funeral accompanied with strong visual language.
