Artwork Description:
The traditional image of Mary is often as a very young woman. The theme of The Annunciation, the title given to those images which depict the scene when the angel Gabriel visits Mary to announce to her that she will give birth to Christ, is described in the first chapter of the Gospel of Luke. In painting after painting the moment is depicted with similar symbolism. Young Mary is in her chamber, often shown holding a book or scroll, apparently interrupted in her reading, when Gabriel enters and greets her. In some earlier images Gabriel carries a scepter or wand as the herald of God. In later representations he presents her with the gift of a Lily, a symbol of purity. I have shown Mary after Gabriel has departed, leaving her to wonder and contemplate the message that Gabriel has given her.
