Artwork Description:
This is Charles Floyd, of Willacoochee, Georgia, Marys maternal grandfather, a farmer and builder during the Great Depression. He was said to be the only man in Coffee County who could and did read the newspaper. Note the details--the floor lamp, the seat cushion replaced by a pillow resting on ropes, the simple boarded walls, the humble furnishings. There is a Floyd Island in the Okefenokee Swamp, so his ancesters might have mirgrated at some time from the swamp, a short distance away, to Willacoochee. This is the VERY FIRST portrait 1979 in the Posner bib overalls series. There are about 20 more now. See this website for many more. The portrait was given to Marys late mother, Mildred Munchel, where it hung in several homes she lived in.
