Artwork Description:
When I was 12 years old, my family moved from an apt. above our store to a duplex in a neighborhood of houses. I got my own bedroom. My mother painted the walls Indian broan and wanted me to do a mural about American Indians on the wall. I did many colored pencil preparatory sketches, but I did not think them good enough to proceed with the mural. I did keep the sketches, and a year after my mother died I finishedthe mural that my mother wanted... but on canvas. It combines the original sketches--with the childish draughtsmanship unimproved--with much more sophisticated draughtsmanship, e. g., the leather possible bag, the feathers, the powder horn, etc. One of the original drawings included a body being borne by two braves with a witch doctor behind the litter... a reference to my deceased motherFor my new room my mother bought a brown spread with my then-name, Rob, embroidered on it. The composition is held together by swirling leather and woven straps. Irene finally got her mural.
