This painting is about the essence of an artwork being distinct from photography. Ashly was arrested for domestic violence and her mugshot was shown on the Internet. Though the charges were dropped, the mugshot remained, duplicating the injustice thousands of times. The photo of the painting seen here is not the work of art but merely a photo, as the photo used to make this painting is not the artwork, and as the mugshot is a photo and not the person. Photos can duplicate the brushstrokes but not be the brushstrokes. The original painting is the work of art, not copies or prints of it. It is Ashly s final exoneration. To have is to refuse to be.
