Artwork Description:

"Thousand Words� is one of the series of �Boundaries� I made to explore the crossing boundaries of Chinese carving, painting and calligraphy with oil painting and acrylic. The concept of �Thousand Words� comes from the original Chinese textbook Thousand Words. The original text of �Thousand Words� was carved on black slate stone, and it was one of the first �text book� (the modern sense) for people to learn how to read and write the first thousand Chinese characters. I create a small section of �Thousand Words� by using a totally different media -oil paints. I add thick layers of black oil paint on canvas to create the texture of black stone as a base. Then I use a palette knife to scrape the Chinese calligraphy on the canvas. The effect is like the carved Chinese calligraphy on a black stone. I use my basic training of Chinese calligraphy to emerge into oil painting. I also applied my Chinese traditional culture into western concept.
