Artwork Description:
"Thousand Words¨ is one of the series of “Boundaries¨ I made to explore the crossing boundaries of Chinese carving, painting and calligraphy with oil painting and acrylic. The concept of “Thousand Words” comes from the original Chinese textbook Thousand Words. The original text of “Thousand Words¨ was carved on black slate stone, and it was one of the first “text book¨ (the modern sense) for people to learn how to read and write the first thousand Chinese characters. I create a small section of “Thousand Words¨ by using a totally different media -oil paints. I add thick layers of black oil paint on canvas to create the texture of black stone as a base. Then I use a palette knife to scrape the Chinese calligraphy on the canvas. The effect is like the carved Chinese calligraphy on a black stone. I use my basic training of Chinese calligraphy to emerge into oil painting. I also applied my Chinese traditional culture into western concept.
