This was purchased from the artist's private collection in the 80's. Raoul Viard (Haitian 1923-1991) is a highly respected, self-taught artist who excelled in developing his own impressionist style, utilizing a spatula with heavy impasto (a painting in which the paint is laid thickly on the canvas). He painted scenes of Haiti, including sea scapes, village and scenes of Port-au-Prince, but his strongest images are those of the Haitian countryside and the people of the area. His work was chosen by the Haitian government to inaugurate the World Health Organization in Washington DC. His work can be found in many private collections worldwide. He died in 1991.
