Artwork Description:

Intaglio, Aquatint, and Drypoint Etching on one zinc plate that measured 6 inches wide by 9 inches high, or 15.24cm by 22.86cm. The print on Stonehenge brand paper cream colored paper measures 11 inches wide by 15 inches high, or 28x38cm. I used Charbonnel brand oil-based printers inks from France. The capital city of Spain, Madrid, is the only location on earth to have a sculpture commemorating Lucifer as The Fallen Angel in a fountain within Retiro Park. I was mesmerized by this artwork sculpted by artist, Ricardo Bellver, both times when I lived in Madrid. On both occasions the work inspired strange dreams, which I later recorded in my sketch books. I used a blend of violet and blue inks to capture the magnetism of the sculpted expression on the face. The Fountain of the Fallen Angel, or Monument of the Fallen Angel, is a highlight of the Buen Retiro Park in the center of Madrid, Spain. Bellver realized it in plaster in 1877 while he was a 3rd year pensioner in Rome. Bellver claimed he was inspired to create this work because of verses from Miltons Paradise Lost, Canto I. He submitted the work to the 1877 edition of the Exposiciones Nacionales de Bellas Artes where it received first prize. The state acquired the work and presented it at the 1878 Exposition Universelle. Since only works in marble and bronze were accepted, the statue was cast in bronze at this occasion. Unfortunately, the plaster original was destroyed. Please note that this etching is shipped to the collector without a frame or mat. This keeps the price low and allows the collector personal choice in matt selection and framing. A sturdy cardboard box is employed for shipping the work. The etching is first wrapped in two layers of acid free glassine and then placed between two archival boards. This is next placed into the shipping carton and securely packed with bubble wrap. There are many hidden illusions in my work, which the collector is encouraged to view in a dark room lit only by purple candles.
