Artwork Description:

Our daughter, Emily. A pencil drawing with a slight touch of colored pencil. I am very pleased with this drawing as it represents a victory in a difficult challenge. Emma my wife, Emily our daughter and I were sitting around the dining room table playing a board game know as Risk the game of world domination as game-maker Parker Brothers describes it. I had just been watching the BBC Video by Simon Shama called Power of Art, a collection of master artist biographies that I highly recommend. I was commenting at the table that every artist in the collection I had seen so far had had horrible lives. Caravaggio murdered someone and had tried to kill his own brother. Rembrandt died a pauper. Bernini was discraced after a tower he built at St. Peters in Rome had to be dismantled. Bernini was a great sculptor, who even at age eight drew a perfect likeness of a Catholic cardinal. Emily said, You cant draw humans anyway. Youre much better at abstracts. I humphed and retorted, I can draw anything. Im just lazyI humphed again, smiled and rolled the dice. A few minutes later I got up from the table, got a drawing pad and an H graphite pencil. Luckily, that night I was not destined to be ruler of the world, so as battles raged around me I took pencil in hand and drew Emilys portrait. I am pleased because first of all, this is not a copy from a photograph. Secondly, this is not from a posed subject either. My subject was an active child whose face would only occcassionaly return to its approximate resting place from where I had begun the drawing. As I was uploading the drawing to Red Bubble my wife joked, You know, no one will ever buy that portrait. I laughed saying, Well, no one ever buys ANY of my art, so who caresIn fact, if I would have to live lives like those famous artists did, perhaps it is best to never sell anything. I never have to worry about clients, art critics, or the public. I dont have to please anyone but myself. So, you see, I am the purest artist there is. And, when we die, Emily will have this whole house full of art to dispose of. By then it will be too late. None of the art can be changed to suit anyones taste. So, Red Bubblers and any passers-by, enjoy the view. Im not reaching for fame or fortune. I am truly only trying to follow my muse that seeks to understand this amazing space-time we are in and somehow express that amazement to whoever passes by. Of course, if you want to send me some money, just deposit it to my Paypal account, which is davidmartsolf@comcast. net. And, may the grace of God be with you. Drawn on Strathmore Wind Power 80 lb acid free drawing paper. The drawing is 8 x 9 in size. pencil, paper, drawing, portrait, female, child, sketch
