Artwork Description:
The concept of myth changes from generation to generation. In ancient Greece, we had Gods and Goddesses and in the middle ages, we had saints and sinners. But in the cinema, particularly in the 1960s, we started to see ant-heroes, outsiders, mavericks, and also the emergence of cinema Icons to reflect our anxieties and desires. This series of paintings explore these different aspects of contemporary myth but also the patina of cinema photos which take on an individual texture and identity as the paper image deteriorates.
Gerard Tunney uses the images of the cinema to explore the ambivalence of contemporary myth. Lee Marvin was the embodiment of the villain but his screen persona was also at the times the hero. These two stills are taken from Pointblank and the man who shot liberty Vallance
